Could you, would you also furnish the means to do this?

I am a native of Mass. (I think perhaps you recollect me,) have taught in eastern N.C. five years and expended while there nearly five hundred dollars of my own earnings for the benefit of the people, and was to quite an extent an [[almones?]] of the bounty of others. You will perceive that I have done what I could here, but I need a little more to make this available. I have confidence in you that you will send the needed assistance.

The people here had a hard time, and have struggled manfully with existing ills; rent are very high; and to avoid this many are now building little houses of their own and this, for a time, must of necessity take most of their earnings. If they could have a lift through these troubles and an appropriation for the board of the teacher for a few months I think they would be able to go on without difficulty.

The school is interesting. The children are learning well. A large night school would be commenced immediately could the house be finished.

Hoping a favorable reply I remain gratefully Elizabeth James
