aid from other sources our schools will have to close for a portion of the year.  This would be a source of injury to the schools and the system to such an extent, that I mean to leave no stone unturned to prevent it.

I pledge you on behalf of the Board I represent that whatever amount you may feel disposed to furnish, shall be scrupulously appropriated entirely for the benefit of our colored schools.  There is where we need it.

We throw ourselves upon your generosity, well knowing that you appreciate the importance of our work, and that your deep interest in the subject will induce you to afford the largest amount of aid possible.
