As missionary to the Freedmen from the Am Bap. Home mission since October 1st 1865 I have enjoyed the most favorable opportunities of observing the interest in the work as manifested by the different officers throughout my ten counties and I take upon myself without consulting Captain Schaeffer the liberty to write you a concise account of his labors here, and then to ask you for the sake of God and the colored people to continue him in the field as Supt. of education. He has spent for the colored people out of his own salary over $1000. and he is not a wealthy man either. When he came to Christiansburg there was not a school in his counties he has established no less than six schools all of which are in a flourishing condition. He purchased the land and then put enough of his own funds with that of the Bureau funds to build a large nice house at Christiansburg - he has repaired a house at Newbern and fitted it for a school he purchased a set in [[?]] county and  helped about their house. The colored people almost idolize him and to take him a way from them would he a great injury to the cause both in a religious
