June of the 21st inst came to hand yesterday I will endeavour to perform the duties of Local Supt. of Schools for this County to the best of my ability, from a long Residence among the Freedmen I have learned what you have douples learned long ago; that it is useless to attempt to eradicate from the minds of the mature and aged of the Freed people the infamous legacy of ignorence and Superstition. bequeathed to them by Slavery at its death, it is only upon the mind of the young that our efforts are to be mainly directed, as the yealding Clay is moulded in shape by the hands of the Potter, So their young minds will yeald to the enlightening influences of Education. and receive the impression from the fount of Knowledge that will bring out to view all the Religious. Moral and Social qualities with which their Creator has endowed them and thus be Rescued from the immorality and vice with which they have been so long
