Heathsville,
Northumberland Co. Va. by its teacher, Sara A. Goodyear.

Jan 11th 1869

When Dr. Nash brought his family to Va. to live, in Apr. 1867, they were accompanied by Miss Howland of Sherwoods, near Auburn, N.Y. the Dr.'s former home.

The col'd people were anxious for education, and this lady, long an instructor of Freedmen & a champion of Equal Rights, soon gathered around her a crowd of learners in a temporary sch.-room, - a log-cabin of the Dr.'s near his house.

For 3 mo's the sch. flourished; when the sudden death of Miss H's mother, & her recall home terminated her labors in it.

Late in the following Nov. the sch. bearing the name of it foundress, was entrusted to me. But meanwhile the Dr. had not been idle. He kept up the Sunday Sch. & with the peoples best efforts, & the aid he enlisted for them in various qur's, a substantial frame building. 25 x 40 ft.
