Gordonsville. March 25. 1869.

R M Manly Esqr,
Sir. The colored people in the neighborhood of Mechanicsville, Louisa County, wish me to become a teacher for their children. Lucas (a freedman)who is teaching there wishes to leave. I am willing to accept, the more so because while Virginians have never evinced a disposition to assist in the Education of that unfortunate race. And my example may be followed by others who are competent. As the freedmen are in as favor condition to aid in any School enterprise I wish to know from you if assistance can be given them and to what extent. Any information on the subject thankfully received. Yours Resp.flly. H. H. Seargeant
