R. M. Manly Esqr
Asst Supt School Dist Va
Richmond Va

Sir
As per instructions received January 9th from Maj Wm R. Morse, to the effect that I was to give notice of the discontinuance of my School, I now beg to inform you that the house hitherto occupied as a School for colored children, and for which rent has been paid by the "Bureau R.F. and A. Lands" will not be needed, after the 30th inst, though I will continue my School in another part of the town. This step is necessary owing to the Col'd people in the locality being so poor that they cannot afford to send but few children to school at this time of year, and as [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] I am paid entirely by the Col'd people it makes my salary for the month very small so that I am obliged to go where I can board much cheaper than I do at present. The house which I have engaged, I can get for four (4) dollars per month, while the Bureau pays Six (6) for the one used at present, I can also have proportionate reduction in my board.
