Yours of the 29th of April has been received. I have not closed my school; as you proposed to assist me I shall continue teaching. How much do you allow per month per scholar? I thank you for your kindness in offering your assistance to get me a larger school elsewhere in the State, but I think that I would rather remain here where I am for the present. I could get 50 or 60 scholars, between the ages of 6 and 16, within the circle distance of three miles, but the colored people (the majority of them) are not able to pay anything for their children's schooling, they are expecting help from the government, and they say that their children will have to wait until they can go to a free
