R. M. Manly Esq.

Dear Sir
Since writing you this morning, I learn from one of the Trustees, (who got it from Miss Scott lately arrived here) that May was the only month for which I was to receive rent on the ground that I was a rebel, and not employed by Govt &c. The party who reported me as such (and I think I know him) might have forgotten that on the 5th day of March last, when I quit my school and went with him for the purpose of organizing the only Republican Association now in the county and of which I was then elected Secretary, but I could not alltogether quit my School, and devote my time wholly to the cause of republicanism. Perhaps you will be better satisfied
