Madison C.H. Va June 13th 1869

Mr. Manly:

I received the letter for Mr. Gordon and as you requested read it to several of the colored people. They seemed surprised to find that he had taken so much responsibility upon himself. I am informed that he wrote without the knowledge or consent of a good many whom he implicated. I am obliged to admit that the colored people here, generally have very little stability about them, But I think if the School can be fairly started there will be little difficulty with it. I understand that more pupils are to enter to morrow, I am requested by several of the more intelligent men to say that Dudley Gordon is a man of no character what ever, Though he is one of the Trustees for the School. I will certainly do the best I can. Shall I sign the blanks and make Report for the 16th or 30th of June?
Very respt. &c. R. D. Scott
