THE AMERICAN MISSIONARY ASSOCIATION, (Central Office, 53 John Street, New York) has been working twenty-two years for the African race. Since the beginning of the Rebellion it has turned special attention to the Freedmen. Whatever a wise Christian benevolence prompts in their behalf, by way of Orphan Schools, Normal Schools, Orphan Homes, Relief for the suffering, and direct religious effort, the Association undertakes, to the full extent of the means furnished by the friends of the colored people. The Teachers and Missionaries last year numbered over 500.

Dear Sir

this will inform you, that your favor of the 9th is at hand, containing a remittance of $13,00 and as I am some what unacquainted [[crossed out]] wh [[/crossed out]] with your manner of doing business in this A. M. A. please be so kind as to give me an explicit explanation concerning this matter, as I do not understand what is meant by $7,00 for April & $6,00 for May. if this is a  portion of my Salary please inform me, previous to this I received a remittance of $16,00 being all that I have received from the Association since I have been on Eastern Shore
