Clarksville Va 24th 1869

Mr. Manley

Dear Sir.
My object in writing this letter is to be informed of certain matters. It is likely that I shall become permanently settled as this place by buying a Home and taking a wife. I shall write to the association to know if it is possible for them to transfer the school to my individual controll, by paying for the Books and property belonging to the association and to receive all moneys and gifts that the government now pays to teachers or associations. Please to inform me what the government pay per month for each scholar and what may be expected from [[strikethrough]] each [[/strikethrough]] the Peabody Fund Yearly. Proposition does not meet the approval of the association. I shall seek another locality either in this State or some other Southern State
Your position enables you to know where teachers & schools are necessary or desired and any information on this subject would be thankfully received and strictly obeyed.
