Tannhauer Cross Roads Sept. 10th 1869
Richmond Co. Virginia

Rev. R. M. Manly

Dear Sir

Yours of the 6 isnt. is received. Rev I only obeyed orders from Headquarters at N.Y. when I wrote to Gen. Howard concerning a school house; and I am very sorry if I offended you while in the path of duty. You say in your letter that you know very well that it did not require anything near $5,00 to build such a house as [[underline]]I described[[/underline]], I did not describe any house - "a house 24 feet by 30 feet made in the plainest way" was your own description, and if there is any error in the statement of cost, the workman, and the sawmill Master is responsible - not me. I gave their statements.

The school is in fine condition; can't you find time to come down, soon?

I have only one class in Alphabet four classes in spelling; two classes in Willsons First Reader; two classes in writing; and two classes Willsons Sec. Reader -
