salary of our teachers, & pay it out of government money in his hands, which he feels authorized to use for such purpose, the N.E. B &c. will be most happy to have its ability to do new work increased, & feels under no obligation to question Mr. Manly's authority to make such use of Government money.

The treasurer however declines to do indirectly, by an agent, that which he is unwilling to do directly, & cannot, therefore, even by implication authorize Mr. Manly to collect rental on behalf of his society & apply it in payment of the society's obligations."
