I enclose check for $72 - being $20- for Mrs. Alston & $52 (for salary & $2.- fare from Richmond) for Mr. Davis.  The latter asked me for his money & I said I would ask you to remit it to him, but did not mention that you had written for it. I thought it might make some unpleasant feeling.

He tells me that Jennings at Tunstall's has eight scholars and Miss Anderson sixteen & asks for teachers for two new places. I wrote that we had not money to support teachers for so few pupils & that he must write me more favorably of those two schools or transfer the teachers to more promising localities.  The
