me since they have found out that I am a widow. My husband having given his life, a Sacrifice, on the Alter of his Country. but far rather would I have him die in defending his Country than live a traitor to it. This war has sown sorrow and misery, broad cast over all our land. but there is an All Seeing Eye who will watch over, and care for the Soldiers widow. As I was a woman I could not serve my County by fighting, though in a humble way I devoted my time in trying to alleviate the sufferings, of the Sick, Wounded and dying, after they were brought within our lines, and many a blessing, have I received from the lips of dying Soldiers, who were far from home, and friends, which repaid me a thousand times, for all I could do to relieve them. Woman could not fight, but they certainly rendered Service to their country, and I feel that She was greatly blessed in her work, but when I spoke of being a widow, I merely mentioned it, as I saw you were under the impression that I was a Young Lady, as you call me Miss, and I only mention the fact in order to correct the mistake, but you will pardon this lengthy note. You know when a woman branches out on any topic She never knows when to stop, your little note served to cheer me. A word of Sympathy has great weight with me, and I am glad to know that any one is interested in this great work before us, that of educating these people. Now that the galling chain of Slavery has been rent asunder, the least we can do is to help them, until they are capable of helping themselves
