Report

The schools under the patronage of the P. E. Home Commission for the education of colored people were opened on the 1st October last - one under the direction of Miss Frances Newton, the other under that of this Miss Frances Williams.

Immediately after the vacation, it was scarcely to be expected that the numbers would be very large; but the increasing desire on the part of the colored people for education is manifest from the rapidity with which the schools increase.

At the opening the rolls numbered about forty-five in each school, with a daily average attendance of about thirty-five, whilst in the short space of nearly two months, the number has increased to one hundred and twenty-vive in both schools taken together; and the average daily attendance is about eighty-five.

The progress of the children in the studies prescribed is very pleasing, indeed; and speaks loudly in favour of the energy and ability of the Teachers.
