Charlie Hope
Jan 1st 1870

Dear Sir,
Yrs. of the 22nd Dec received. E.B. Jones has a school some six miles across the Meherrin River from this place Charlie Hope. His post office is here – The location of the school I propose opening is at "Charlie Hope" five miles west of Lawrenceville in the land of Mr B.B. Wilkes my father. There was a school at Lawrenceville by Mr [[Burtank?]] but none at present

As to the number of pupils that will attend I think I dare say there will be some forty or fifty. Through the col’d people who seem anxious for me to open a school say I can get as many as I will receive.

The parents are not able to give much if willing to give anything. though Mr Burtank charge 50 cts per month a pupil.

Common Loghouses are on the plantation in one of which I can teach till I could build one more suitable.

Twenty five dollars I suppose would cover the rent of the building.
The colored people have been anxious for the last year or two for me to commence a school on this neighborhood but were unable of themselves to support a teacher. Hoping this may be satisfactory

I remain yrs. B. Bassett Wilkes –

Charlie Hope, P.O., Brunswick Co,Va
