Mr. Manly,
Dear Sir:
Your very kind letter of 21st inst. is safely at hand, and I thank you, for kind attention to my [[?]] matters. When I was in the city last of Feb, I [[?]] up at the Devanfort [[?]] House, and had not money to spare to pay him then; Will you please pay if, he calls for it, [[?]] of the March rent; and send me $5. Next week, and every month hereafter.It is much needed here, the people are suffering, even for bread & clothes; and cannot pay up promptly. When Mr. Hooker [[?]] sends my wages, please send $10 of that, for me, to Capt. Ira Sayles, Christiansville, Meeklenburg Co. Va; and request him, to give it to my brother Ned [[?]]. He is greatly distressed by an exmaster, for house and land rent. I have a letter from Capt. Sayles, setting forth the awful condition of colored people in that [[?]]. You would greatly oblige me, by communicating with him on this subject, in the Bureau could afford to help them any. My children are getting of their Primers, If you can let me
