At the time of his application to her, I felt that it was really asking a great deal of a sister: but these poor fellows are so crushed, that they apply to each other for a little relief, with a sense of utter helplessness. This was exactly the tone of Ned's letter to his sister, as he dictated it to me. I was forcibly struck with his earnest pleading and impending despair, in case of failure to obtain from her something to meet his wants. Neither is his a solitary case, I assure you. They are abundant in this section.
