Christiansburg, VA. June 30th 1870.
Rev. R. M. Manly
Dept. of Education, Va.,
Dear Sir:
In pursuance to your instructions of the 20th ult, I proceeded during this month to the counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles, Wythe, Roanoke and Botetourt for the purpose of inspecting schools and school interests in the counties. At Wytheville the examination was highly satisfactory, but found trouble existing among certain parties, which had reduced considerably the average attendance, and in a measure had retarded the progress of the school. Succeeded however in obtaining a satisfactory adjustment of the difficulties, and have reasons to hope that there will be unity and cooperation in the future. There will be two months vacation, from July 1st to Sept. 1st, the lovely mount school is gaining strength, and for the short time the pupils have been under instruction, they have done exceedingly well. This school will be kept open by the Philadelphia Friends Association during the entire summer. At Newbern, Pulaski Co., the school closed for the summer vacation on the 31st ult. I found some little trouble existing in regard to school matters, but had them settled satisfactorily.
