There are Several Sabbath schools for Freedmen in the County where they are taught to read and write, these schools are well attended. And are producing a decided improvement in the Freedmen. The Principal obstacle in the way is the inability to procure Books. Although the People will Not furnish material aid for the purpose now. I feel satisfied that Another Year will cause a change even in this, they will see that the Condition of the Freedmen is so much improved by education. and having in some degree recovered from the effects of the War they will feel disposed to render some aid. I think also the Freedmen will learn a lesson from experience this Year. And Contract habits of economy thereby anabling them to do Something towards educating themselves.
There is a general aversion to having Teachers from Abroad, the Universal wish appearing to be that home teachers should be employed
I am full satisfied that any attempted obstruction placed in the way of instructing the Freedmen, would be promptly put down by the Community generally but in my opinion
