of Virginia Richmond. Va. July 18 1866 [[3-columned table]] | Reply to Ques No IX chances of local friends to the enterprise. | Reply to Ques No X Concerning State of public sentiment. regarding the subject | General Remarks. | | --- | --- | --- | | Some interest has been manifested by the white citizens of this County in the enterprise but I do not think it can be relied upon in regard to material aid -- This must come from the colored population - that is so far as local aid is concerned. | I have heard no open expressions of hostility or opposition to this movement upon the part of the white people -- I think no difficulties would grow out of the enterprise if it would not interfere with the pecuniary interests of the whites. I am satisfied the material aid which they would render - would amount to little. | The feeling in this County is much more favorable in the matter of colored schools at the same time no contributions can be safely calculated upon. The whites as a general thing are not in any better condition to contribute to the work than the colored people are. | wledge and belief the foregoing statement is correct. Jno W.
