The only thing that can be done for the improvement in knowledge of the Adult Freedmen, is the opening of night Schools, for they are employed during the day, and so anxious are they now to acquire information, that they meet at the Teacher's houses at night and endeavor to improve by their little meetings in this manner. A great many visit the Sunday schools, and there they are taught to Spell and Read in the Scriptures. The feeling of opposition to Schools is diminishing very fast and the encouragement of the Schools seems to be more general, the Whites having seen the beneficial results therefrom.
