There are seven Schools taught by freedmen - but very poorly attended, and barely supported: tuition is from .50 cts to $1.00 pr. month for each child.
The following detailed report is given to show precisely what the freedmen are doing for themselves.
1st Mrs. Louise Selby (cold), wife of an ignorant farmer, teaches a class of seven single children at her own house on the "Whitehall" (is house and garden lot) farm near Horntown, Accomac Co. Va. rented @ $24.00 pr year from a white resident. Mrs. Selby is a very well appearing and intelligent young woman who learned to read and a little of geography and arithmetic from some friends of hers who came from Philadelphia. She cannot write at all - reads fairly - never went to school.
With good advantages she could have been a valuable teacher. Her school opened the first of May '67 - she was urged by her friends to undertake it though they have not well sustained her: no opposition has been received from the neighboring whites - on several receiving encouragement. Tuition is .50 cts pr. month for each child: but $2.25 have as yet been paid in
