Some Northern Society should take up this field, but could they it our land and with Bureau assistance create it's own school houses. The leading colored men care more for churches than schools: churches generally own the land procured for schooling purposes: they ask keep in building school houses mainly with a view of getting a place of worship.

The two interests are liable to conflict and the school will surely get the worst of it.

If the freedpeople aid in erecting the school house each one will consider himself a large proprietor and entitled to send his children free of tuition.

I should not be surprised at considerable jealousy of any northern Society that might operate independently.

There should be at least six schools opened this fall on the "Eastern Shore". ten would not be too many.
