In the large villages or cities  I have thought that causes of familiar lectures on various topics would be most desirable; much might be done in this way to spread general information and useful knowledge
I have observed with pain that the freedman's ambition is usually limited to a certain minimum of achievement and that the spirit of inquiry into, of wonder at the most striking facts of the material world does not exist in any encouraging degree. But there their lives are but a struggle to get something to eat and to wear; it is not strange that they have no desire of philosophical research.
The American Missionary Association of New York and the Friends Association of Philadelphia have established schools in my sub district which have been regularly and in detail reported. These schools are all graded: each society has its superintendant upon whose efficiency and energy the success of their schools largely depends. the plan of theirs is good. the schools are well taught.
