Headquarters, Sub-District New Kent and Charles City Counties, Va.

New Kent C.H., Va., April 29th,1867.

Agent 5th Dist Va.

Sir;

Owing to the lateness of the season and for farmers, and the present being the height of the fishing season, it has been impossible to get the freedmen together to get their views upon the subject of education. The following information has been gained in conversation with individuals and from my personal observation.

In New Kent County there are no Schools whatever for Colored people, either adults or minors; at some point in the vicinity of Barhamsville and of Crump’s Coop Roads there could be obtained at each as scholars about forty children for the day and the same number of adults for the night sessions.

In Charles City County there is one school for colored children now in operation, taught by Sam Brown
