Pursuant to Cir No 5 C. S. War Dept Bureau R F. and A.L. I have the honor to report that the educational interests of the "Freedmen" in the immediate vicinity of this place are well provided for by the "Friends Association of Philadelphia."  They have erected school houses at the expense of nearly three thousand dollars. which have been productive of great good to the "Freedmen."  Monthly reports of the schools have been forwarded regularly giving average attendance, grades & c.
The schools of this county with one exception are combined and situated near the "Freedmens Village" of "Slabtown" which the voice of morality, temperance and the ultimate best interests of the Freedmen all dictate that this village should be broken up, but its residents cling to the opportunities here offered than for education with great tenacity even at the sacrifice of all other con-
