The whites, at least the educated and better class, are favorable to the school movement, providing the teachers are not from the North - or speaking more correctly, they would infinitely prefer, that the freedmen should be taught by their own people.

I do not think that in this County, any outward opposition would be shown, however; even were northern teachers employed. 

For the proper carrying out of a School system (in Matthews) four buildings are necessary -

One for the neighborhood of the lower portion of the county - which might properly be known as the "New Point" dist.

One at or near the Court House itself - for the "Court House" dist.

One for the Westerly or "East River" dist and, Lastly - one for the northerly or "Hooken fair" dist.

There is but one building Erected, this is situated near the Court house and is owned by a Colored church Society.  It can be used for a school at once - and will be a suitable building for the purpose during the summer months.
