Freedmen, they would be driven away and the houses erected burned or torn down.

This report came in from the freedmen to me and in fact I heard white people say so myself. I instructed the negroes to go on and build and that I would sustain them. But they returned to me with the fact that no land could be bought as the whites would not sell them any. So the school project was stopped

There is now in course of Erection two churches & School Houses in my Sub Dist. One near the Hague, in Westmorland Co Va and one at Warsaw Richmond Co Va. These two societies have been to me for books and teachers. Should there schools be started in each of my counties and in the right localities the average attendance to them would be of adults 175.

The Freedmen are very anxious for schools and especially Sunday Schools.

I think if land was bought for them say an acre ($15) The Freedmen could do the rest excepting in the line of books.
