General:

I have the honor to report in compliance with circ. no. 17 Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr Va of date Dec. 20th 1867 that I have made a personal inspection of all the freedmen's schools in the two Div'ns under my charge as required by said circular. There are in all five large and flourishing schools, located respectively at Gordonsville, Charlottesville, Orange C.H., Louisa C.H. and Mechanicsville. These are all furnished teachers by the New England Society and are all in as good a condition and as well conducted and as promising for the future as can well be.
