General:

I have the honor to submit the following Report on Education among the freedmen in this Division for the month of September 1868.

Since last Report one school has been started at Columbia in Fluvanna County a monthly report from which is transmitted. This school now numbers over thirty scholars. Mr. S.D. Anderson, the teacher, is a colored man of sufficient attainments to teach a primary school. He has been an assistant teacher in another County and came to me well recommended. I sent him to Columbia where he has succeeded in establishing a school. He writes me that his school might be more than doubled in numbers, if he could obtain books. He has taken all he could find in Columbia, and has written urgently for me to send him some, but I have only about a dozzen small
