Gen,
Through Hd Qrs S.A. Comr in compliance with Cir. No. 17, dated Hd Qrs Asst Comr. Richmond Va, Dec 20th 1864, respectfully forward the following Report:
At the time I forwarded my Report- on Form 4, I was not aware of the existence of a school of any discription for the benefit of the Freedmen in this Division of the Sub District. but have learned since there is one in operation in a remote portion this county. After learning this fact I visited the School and found it composed of an average of 30 scholars taught by Mr. O'Donnell (a white man). He charges One Dollar per Month for each Scholar as tuition fee. He informed me that he has been teaching about two months and that none of his Scholars could repeat the Alphabet when they commenced with him. I found that nearly the whole of his school can spell in three syllables. and some few can read in rather an imperfect manner. To be candid in the matter, I think the school is about as far advanced as it can be, under the tuition of the present Teacher
