The Bearer, John Levine, has been in my employ for several weeks; four at least if I recollect right, previous to his last employment by Mr. Fitz. I know him to be an honest & scrupulously faithful man, at least, to have been so in all his relation to me. I cannot express for emphatically my confidence in his good moral character. As to the statement made by Mr Fitz that I told him, (Fitz) that John Levine had stolen nails from me, it is not true, at least in that shape. I know that I have never made that statement to Mr Fitz in reference to any particular person, calling the person by name. I may have remarked some time after finishing work on the Coal Camp School House that [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] lumber & nails had gone from there which had not gone into the building. I probably did say in general terms that the men employed there (of whom John Levine was one) had without doubt
