Office Superintendent R.F. & A. L. 1st Dis't of Va.
Norfolk, Va., April 19 1866.

PERSONALLY appeared before me, A Commissioned Officer and Superintendent of the Bureau of R. F. & A. L. Alexander Paden who being duly sworn, declare that he is the identical Alex. Paden who was a Priv't in Company of the 1st Regt. of Col. [[strikethrough]] Volunteers, [[/strikethrough]] Cav. and who enlisted in the service of the United States at Norfolk on the 20 day of Aug. 1864, and was discharged from the service of the United States at Brazos Tex. on the 4 day of February 1866. That he claims $100.00 dollars bounty retained under General Order, No. 90, Head Quarters, Department of Virginia and North Carolina, Series 1864. That he never received a certificate of retained bounty, [[strikethrough]] or that he lost his certificate of retained bounty at on or about the day of 186 . [[/strikethrough]]

That I, Alex. Paden have made, constituted and appointed, and by these presents do make, constitute and appoint Capt. JAMES A. BATES, Act. Asst. Adgt. Genl., my true and lawful Attorney, for me and my name, place and stead, to draw and obtain for me the sum of 100 dollars [[strikethrough]] and cents [[/strikethrough]], now deposited in and with the Bureau of R. F. & A. L., Washington, D. C., and also to deposite the same with the Freedmen's Savings and Trust Company at Norfolk in my name immediately upon its receipt by him.

ALSO personally appeared before me Fleming Johnston and Owen Woodus of the county of Norfolk and State of Va. who being duly sworn, declare that the above named applicant was a Priv't in Company J of the First Regiment of Co'd [[strikethrough]] Volunteers, [[/strikethrough]] Cav'ly and know him to be the identical person named in the foregoing declaration; and that they have no interest whatever in the application.
