Head-Quarters, District of [[strikethrough]] Beaufort [[strikethrough]] New Berne
New Berne, N. C., March 31st, 1866

Capt.
This man George Gerkins (col'd) makes a report to this Office, that one Dr. Reddin of Bay River [Craven?]County, rushed upon him with an open knife, aiming at his throat but with great exertion he was able to ward off the blow, upon his failing to accomplish his purpose, he ran for his axe, not succeeding in that, he got his gun by that time. Gerkins got out of his way. The reason assigned for this was, that Gerkins was endeavoring to get his daughter, which was in the Reddinn's employ. What can be done in this [?] similar cases.
Yours respectfully, Isaac A Rosekians, Capt.[?}
