I made no arrests as we have no Lockup or jail, and knowing the people so well that as soon as the Soldiers were gone, neither myself and family nor the School teachers could stay in the City with any safety, not for 24 hours. so I have acted on the best plan by investigating the whole affair and find it not half so bad as it was reported to me this morning, if the Negroes had gone after the Soldiers, then they would have caught the Villins in the act but no body knew anything about it untill morning. We dont need any Soldiers here to keep down the colored people. if any are needed it will be to keep down the Whites.
Col. I write you this letter now thinking that somebody else might write to you and misrepresent the whole affair to you but believe me Col. I have given you just the facts of the case, and will not write anything else.
