The property contains in addition to the office I occupy, sheds & stables & vacant ground which is indispensable to us. I do not see how the office itself could be given up without the greatest inconvenience. I do not know any place in town that would answer our purpose as well. As to rent, Gen Howards order would cover it, but I see by a recent dispatch from Washington the the "2d Comptroller has decided not to allow claims for rent or other use of Rebel property seized during the Rebellion and used by Officers of the Army for military purposes." It may be that vouchers would pass the Auditors office, but if we decline to pay, the claim could never be allowed by the 2d Comptroller.
