Kesiah Humphrey states under oath that she lives in Onslow County N.C. at Richlands on property of John Shackleford formerly belonged to Wm Humphrey, now deceased. That on Tuesday the 6th of March 1866, John Shackleford of Richlands came to her house, told her there was order from the head man in New Berne that all children that had no father should be bound out. Ordered her to report at the Court House tomorrow. Said she couldn't go having a child only 4 weeks old and the weather cold - He told her her children would be bond at the June Court. The same evening sd Shackleford returned and said he had had her children, Ann aged 14 years, Richard aged 7 bound to him  Deponent has a husband Samson Bedient in U.S. Military service near Wilmington and is able to support her children.
