Carnegie Institute Department Of Fine Arts Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Homer Saint-Gaudens Director May 24, 1941 Mr. Yasuo Kuniyoshi 118 Waverly Place New York, New York Dear Mr. Kuniyoshi: Your letter of May 22 to Mr. Saint-Gaudens has been referred to me for an answer. You may know that Mr. Saint-Gaudens is on a leave of absence from the Institute. He is in active army service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Engineering Corps. His headquarters is in the Office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, but he is now on a special mission for some six weeks. I know that if we could reach him, he would be only too glad to give you the letter you request. In his place, I am enclosing a letter which I hope will be of some service to you in the event you get in an embarrassing position in your sketching work in the Southwest. I saw your exhibition at the Downtown Gallery in April and liked it very much. I was particularly impressed by the large drawing, the title of which I believe was "Two Dancers." It was very handsome. Here's hoping you have a very pleasant working tour, and I trust that you will not be interrupted in your work. With all good wishes to you and Mrs. Kuniyoshi, Faithfully yours, J-C John O'Conner, Jr. Acting Director JO'C ER
