   I have always felt back of mind in certain period the ideal landscape and certain set likes and dislikes. Up to about 1930 I used to go to Maine and that severe landscape and simple New England buldings were my god. Whenever I did anything I used to make up that type of scenery somewhere in the picture.

   Naturally when we built a house in Woodstock in 1930, without questioning we copied the shape of New England house. When house was all finished and when it came to painting shutters, I told them to paint it black, thinking somewhere I remembered that shutters in [[strikethrough]] [?] [[/strikethrough]] Main were black. Whether it was true or not, I made them do it under protest. They told me that shutters were never black but today I find right here in Woodstock lots of houses have black shutters all over the place. 
 
   I copied the fireplace, too. Same way as it was in my studio in Ogunquit, Maine, but somehow I wasn't here when fireplace was built. Only
