What happened was that it was a fire alarm box and it made a terrible noise, ringing bells. Naturally we were so scared we ran back into the hotel.

A few minutes later there was a fire engine and he had to confess he had done. Being a stranger in this country he got off easily but he had to pay a $25 fine. But I felt sorry for old man paying $25 on his first day. It was to him a lot of [[strikethrough]] moen [[/strikethrough]] money.

We talked about [[strikethrough]] it [[/strikethrough]] later many strange things. We had a big argument about toilet. We didn't know really which way we should face. We sat both ways but we couldn't make up our minds which was the right way.

All these people came together on the same boat. We were strangers but we were friendly because we were in strange land.

I didn't know anything about their backgrounds and neither did they about mine. Well, we left for Seattle by rail together. And they went their way and I went my way. I never saw them again or never heard from or about them. I often think about first day in America and wondered what happened to those people.
