But this spring of 1942, it is hard to feel that careless joy I have felt so many other springtimes. This year we have things to think about and things to worry about that the first warm breeze cannot blow away. The cares and troubles or everyday life are faded and insignificant beside the problem of world wide scope we face today. 

The issue is clean cut.

Democracy versus totalitarianism or freedom versus slavery. All over the globe people are defending the same beliefs and desires against the same forces of tyranny and oppression. For the first time the world has become a single unit.

This spring, the Chinese, the Russians, the English, and Americans, the rebellious people in countries that are conquered physically, and you and I, have found a common denominator: Love of freedom.
