We also knew/ that inevitably/ we would have to take our stand against fascism, which revealed itself/ as an international menace in Spain. It is now/ that we must realize how important it is that we win the peace.

We are still in the midst of a world crisis, but that day December 7th, has taken on a greater significance/ as the war progresses. It will be memorable/ not as a symbol of the beginning of hostilities, bloodshed and destruction, but as the rebirth of the concepts upon which this nation was founded. War, terrifying in all its phases, nevertheless, has strengthened and unified our purpose:// The achievement of freedom. This creed, outlined by the United Nations in their declaration of the Four Freedoms/is the beacon we must sustain/ throughout the war as well as the peace.

Some of these proposed aims, I have enjoyed as a resident of the United States. Perhaps being an artist makes life freer. But throughout my career/ I have had innumerable occasions to learn and realize/ the valuable meaning of living in a land/ where the ideas of democracy exist. As a Japanese/ I have felt deeply its significance, in contrast to the nation in which I was born.
