Copy Carnegie Institute Department of Fine Arts Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania April 2, 1952 Gordon Bailey Washburn Director Mr. Usaburo Ihara Chairman, Japanese Artists Association Naruse Building 1 Gofukubashi 3-Chome Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku Tokyo, JAPAN Dear Mr. Ihara: Your letter of February 5 arrived here just as Mr. Washburn was preparing to leave for Europe in the interests of the International, and while he studied it thoroughly he had time to dictate only an outline of his reply, asking to complete it for him. I am sorry for the delay, but we have had many complications in our office these past months. After going over the lists again, Mr. Washburn decided to include the following sixteen paintings: Abe, Nobuya ADAM AND EVE Ihara, Usaburō YURIKO AND MIMI Inokuma, Gen-ichorō CAT AND FLOWERS Kazuki, Yasuo MORNING Kojima, Zenzaburō SMALL FLOWERS Migishi, Setsuko GOLD FISH Miyamoto, Saburō STILL LIFE Murai, Masanari MOTHER AND CHILD (B) Okamoto, Tarō NAUGHTY BOYS Sakamoto, Hanjirō PERSIMMONS Satō, Kei CHESTNUTS AND ROUND WEED Suda, Kunitarō DOG Tamura, Kazuo SNOWY DAY Wakita, Kazu CHILD IN A BATHTUBE Yasui, Sētarō PORTRAIT OF YOKOYAMA_TAIKAN Yoshihara, Jirō SUNDAY The names are written above as they were on the backs of the photographs. I am enclosing an entry form for each painting, plus three extras in case any are spoiled. You will also find the necessary number of stickers with a few extras. We were pleased at your willingness to contact the artists for us. Will you be good enough to see that each entry form is signed in both places? The second signature permits keeping the pictures for the second showing at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The Trustees of Carnegie Institute and Mr. Washburn hope there will be complete agreement about this, since they do not want to send the exhibition to San Francisco unless it can go in its complete state.
