New York, July 18, 1865 General: I take the liberty of requesting your attention to the following: In a few months the New England Rooms of this city will cease to exist. The Matron of these Rooms, Mrs. Russell, will then probably be without employment. She is desirous of some position whereby She can obtain a livelihood, and, in my opinion, would make an excellent lady Superintendent for some depot of Freedmen, refugees, or any similar post. She has been Matron of our institution for the past three years, and, as one of the Committee, I can speak from personal observation of the great fidelity, honesty and unwearied devotion with which She has discharged her onerous duties, night and day. I wrote to Maj. Gen. Harvard in her behalf, and he responded by advising me to apply to any Ass't. Commissioner. I do so now, being so induced by frequently hearing you
