Kenansville N.C. Feby 28th. 1867 Major H.H. Foster, Supt &c Dear Sir, Buck Houston Freedman, has applied to me to get a son of his named Abram, who is now in the possession of Mr A. F. Williams who refuses to surrender him. Buck informs me that you wrote Major [[Ri?]] Chrmn of our County Court to have the boy taken from him. Legally a justice of the Peace can do nothing in the premises. The only legal remedy is by Habeas Corpus and this writ can only be granted in this State by a Judge of the Superior Court. The nearest Judge is Brixton of Fayetteville. There will be a Judge here 4th Monday in March our Superior Court, at which time there is no doubt that Buck can get the boy by law. It can be done immediately by taking the parties to Fayetteville. I have written this to explain to you Buck's legal remedy &c. I am, Major, With the highest respect, Your Obt Servt J. W. Stallings
