The Undersigned, humbly complaining, respectfully showeth that Charles Bryan, alias Holmes, freedman living near Kenansville on Dr Spicer's farm, on or about the 19th inst took from said place, two apprenticed girls one named Jane aged 17 yrs, the other Ellen aged 15. Jane bound by Indenture to your Petr in Novr by Lieut James Monroe at this place while your Petr resided in Sampson, & Ellen by Lieut Drinker in Decr last, after your Petr removed to  Wilmington, done in Wilmington & where Ellen had been living, that both these girls are Orphans I have avoided your Petr & kept out of his way.  that on the 17th inst your Petr went to the farm of Dr Spicer where said Orphans were living with their Grandmother Mary Ann Bryan, alias Faison & requested her to tell her grandchildren
