I have the honor to report, that on the 27th Ult. Mr. William Birnie the Agent of this Bureau at Lumberton Robeson Co was set upon, while standing on the porch of his office, by three Ruffians named C Godwin, Edward McQueen and Archey McNair, and severely beaten and ejected from the porch into the street. After some little difficulty a Magistrate was found who issued a Warrant for the arrest of the parties, who were brought before him and bound over in a very small amount for their appearance at the next term of the Superior Court in September next. Mr Birnie forwarded to me a full statement of the outrage and asked that the parties should
